WHERE TO BUY A COMFORTER

SILK COMFORTER

IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR: A lightweight comforter that's warm and luxurious like down and also hypoallergenic.

WHY WE LIKE IT: This silk filled comforter is filled with 100% premium grade mulberry silk, with a 100% silk shell. Testers raved about sleeping beneath a silk duvet and loved how superbly soft and unbelievably luxurious it feels. Silk naturally adapts to changes in your body's temperature, so silk duvets are good all year long. Silk's excellent temperature regulating properties also solved a common couple's problem by satisfying 2 sleepers with different definitions of "warm" and "cozy". Silk is naturally hypoallergenic and inhospitable to dust mites, so silk comforters are an excellent alternative for those with allergies and Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS).

BEST SILK COMFORTER: Silk Comfort® Silk Comforter, from $200 for Twin
TO BUY: Silk Comfort, www.SilkComfort.com.

DOWN COMFORTER

IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR: A lightweight comforter that'll keep you warm.

WHY WE LIKE IT: This comforter is filled with a 600 fill power duck down, with a cotton shell. A Down comforter provides warmth during the winter, but unless you turn up the air conditioning, it is too warm for warm weather use. Choose a down comforter with a fill power of 550 or higher. The higher the fill number, the loftier, softer and warmer the comforter and ranges from 450 to 800. Goose feathers are softer and loftier than duck feathers. Look for a high thread count shell to make sure feathers won't poke through or escape the shells.

BEST DOWN COMFORTER: Sateen down comforter,
from $219 for Twin
TO BUY: Cuddle Down, 800-323-6793

SYNTHETIC-DOWN COMFORTER

IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR: A lightweight comforter that mimics the feel of down and is also hypoallergenic.

WHY WE LIKE IT: If you're allergic to down but want the feel of it, your options are a silk comforter or synthetic-down comforter. Unlike down, which can be tricky to launder, this synthetic polyester-filled comforter is easier to wash and is a low maintenance solution for beds with kids. At its best, a synthetic-down comforter mimics the plushness and loftiness of down comforters and is comparable to a 550-fill power down comforter.

BEST SYNTHETIC-DOWN COMFORTER: Primaloft synthetic comforter, from $145 for Twin.
TO BUY: Land's End, www.landsend.com

COTTON COMFORTER

IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR: A medium weight comforter that's not too warm.

WHY WE LIKE IT: This comforter is filled with 100% cotton, with a cotton shell. Cotton is a heavier fill, so it works well for people who like something heavy on top of them. Cotton comforters are breathable, but are good for warm weather use only, since cotton is not as insulating as silk comforters or down comforters. Unless you turn up the heat, they're not warm enough for cold weather use.

BEST COTTON COMFORTER: Prestige cotton comforter from $178 for Twin.
